BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will open its spring slate of tournaments this weekend at the 2011 Puerto Rico Classic men’s golf tournament, to be played in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico The event will be played Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at the 6,902-yard, par-72 Rio Mar Country Club’s River Course.

Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) will open the spring in the first position for the Hokies. He led the Hokies in scoring during the fall season, with a stroke average of 71.40 strokes per round.

Sophomore Mike Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) will play second for the Hokies. He was second in scoring in the fall, at 71.93 strokes per round. Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) is in the line-up at No. 3 and junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will play fourth. Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) will play in the fifth spot for the Hokies.

The 15-team tournament features 12 teams in the top 50 nationally, according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Three of the nation’s top five teams, including No. 1 Oklahoma State, are in the field. The Hokies are currently ranked 53rd in Golfweek’s rankings. Other teams competing, along with the Hokies and Cowboys are host Purdue, Alabama, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, NC State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oklahoma, defending champion Texas and UNC Greensboro.

The teams will play practice rounds on Saturday. Live scoring will be available on a link from hokiesports.com and golfstat.com.
