GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a final round three-under-par 285 and finished in third place at the sixth annual UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate men’s golf tournament in Greensboro, N.C. on Sunday afternoon. The event was played at the 7,197-yard, par-72 Forest Oaks Country Club.
The Hokies shot six-under-par 282 in Saturday morning’s first round, before posting a 13-under-par 275 in the afternoon’s second round. Tech finished with a three-round total of 22-under-par 842, the Hokies’ lowest total of the season.
Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) tied for fourth place with a total of 10-under-par 206. He finished four strokes behind co-medalists Blayne Barber of Auburn and David Lipsky of Northwestern.
Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) tied for 11th at five-under-par 211 and senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) tied for 16th place at 214. Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) tied for 19th place at 215 and junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) tied for 26th place at even-par 216. Senior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) played the event as an individual and tied for 65th place at 226.
Day-one leader North Carolina held on in the final round to claim the team title. They shot a three-round total of 31-under-par 833, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Auburn and nine strokes ahead of the Hokies. Michigan finished fourth at 843, Northwestern was fifth at 853, Charlotte ws sixth at 863 and Toledo was seventh at 865. Pepperdine was eighth at 867, VCU and Mississippi State tied for ninth at 871, host UNC Greensboro was 11th at 873, Kentucky was 12th at 877, Minnesota was 13th at 879 and Michigan State finished 14th at 889.
The Hokies’ 285 on Sunday tied for the second-lowest round of the afternoon. This marks the first tournament this season that all five Hokies finished par-or-better overall. This is the Hokies’ final tournament of the fall. Tech returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 20 at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
