JONESBOROUGH, tenn. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round 12-over-par 300 and is tied with Wake Forest for eighth place at the 13th annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at The Ridges on Friday. The tournament is being played at the 7,147-yard, par-72 The Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough, Tenn.
Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) got off to a hot start for the Hokies, shooting a two-under-par 70 and is tied for second place. He and Jace Long of Missouri are two strokes behind first round John Hahn of Kent State.
Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 27th place at 75 and senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) is tied for 42nd place after a 77 on Friday. Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) is tied for 47th at 78 and senior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) is tied for 74th place at 84.
Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) and redshirt freshman Marc McDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) are playing the event as individuals. Chalkley leads all unattached players in a tie for 16th place overall after a first round 74 and MacDonald is tied for 32nd place at 76.
Kent State shot a three-over-par 291 and holds a four stroke lead over North Carolina and Missouri. UNC Wilmington is fourth at 296, Virginia is fifth at 297 and Chattanooga and Tennessee are tied for sixth at 299, one stroke ahead of the Hokies and Demon Deacons. Michigan is 10th at 303, host East Tennessee State and Coastal Carolina are tied for 11th at 305, Louisville is 13th at 309 and Denver is 14th at 314.
The second round will be played on Saturday and the final round will be played on Sunday. The Hokies will tee-off on Saturday at 10:10 a.m., grouped with Tennessee and Wake Forest. Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
