MACON, Ga. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of 10-over-par 874 and finished in eighth place at the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside golf course in Macon, Georgia on Sunday afternoon.
The Hokies shot a final round five-under-par 283 on Sunday. They shot a 10-over-par 298 on Friday and followed that with a five-over-par 293 on Saturday.
Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) tied for fifth place individually at four-under-par 212 after his second straight two-under-par 70 in the final round. Russell Henley of Georgia won medalist honors with a 10-under-par 206, six strokes ahead of Bailey.
Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) tied for 35th place at six-over-par 222. Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) tied for 39th place at 223 and senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) tied for 50th at 227. Senior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) tied for 58th place at 228. Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) played the tournament as an individual, shot his three straight rounds of 77 and tied for 68th place. The Hokies’ three seniors all shot two-under-par 70s on Sunday afternoon.
Georgia won the team title, leading all three rounds. They finished with a seven-under-par 857, one stroke ahead of defending national champion Augusta State by one stroke. ASU made up 11 strokes in the final round, shooting a 13-under-par 275 on Sunday. Florida State was third at 863, Georgia Tech was fourth at 867 and Mississippi was fifth at 871. Chattanooga finished sixth at 872 and Clemson was seventh at 873, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Texas-Arlington finished ninth at 875, Oklahoma was 10th at 881 and North Florida was 11th at 882. Colorado State finished 12th at 892, host Mercer was 13th at 893, Gonzaga was 14th at 905 and Boston College finished 15th at 944. Tech’s final round 283 was tied for the fourth-best round on Sunday.
The Hokies will have a short turnaround, as they will return to action on Friday in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges. The tournament will be played Oct. 15-17 at the 7,147-yard, par 72 Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough, Tenn.
