MACON, Ga. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot an opening round ten-over-par 298 on Friday and is tied with Florida State and Gonzaga for 11th place at the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,175-yard Brickyard at Riverside golf course in Macon, Georgia.
Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) and junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) each shot even-par 72 and are tied for 13th place. The Hokie duo is four strokes behind indivdual leaders Carter Newman of Augusta State, Kyle Scott of Georgia Tech and Hudson Swafford of Georgia, who each shot four-under-par 68 on Friday.
Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) shot a 76 and is tied for 46th place and senior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) shot a 78 and is tied for 62nd place. Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) is tied for 76th after an opening round 80. Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) is playing the event as an individual and is tied for 56th place after shooting a 77. Moyers shot six-under-par on the final seven holes to get to 76.
Georgia leads after the first round with a one-under-par 287, one stroke ahead of North Florida. Defending national champion Augusta State is third at 289 and Georgia Tech and Clemson are tied for fourth at 291. Chattanooga and Texas-Arlington are tied for sixth at 292, Oklahoma is eighth at 294 and Colorado State is ninth at 295. Ole Miss is 10th at 297, one stroke ahead of the Hokies, Seminoles and Bulldogs. Host Mercer is 14th at 305 and Boston College is 15th at 317. The top 11 places and ties are within 11 strokes.
