MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of 13-over-par 877 and finished in eighth place at the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia on Tuesday. The event was played on the par-72, 6,955 yard Manakin Course at Hermitage.

The Hokies shot a final round five-over-par 293 on Tuesday morning. Tech shot an 11-over-par 299 in Monday’s morning round, before improving to a three-under-par 285 in the afternoon’s second round.

Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) led the Hokies again this week. He shot a three-round total of two-over-par 218 and tied for 17th place. He shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Nate McCoy of Iowa State won medalist honors with an eight-under-par 208, defeating Robert Hoadley of UNC Greensboro by one stroke.

Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) shot a 219 and tied for 23rd place and junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) shot a 221 and tied for 31st place. Senior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) tied for 44th at 224 and freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) tied for 49th at 226. Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) played the event as an individual and tied for 29th place at 220. Green was the low individual not competing with a team in the tournament.

UNC Wilmington won the tournament at two-under-par 862, one stroke better than Wake Forest. East Carolina was third at 868, Richmond was fourth at 870, UNC Greensboro was fifth at 871, Charlotte was sixth at 874 and Liberty was seventh at 876, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Iowa State was ninth at 878, host VCU was 10th at 880, Mercer and James Madison tied for 11th at 893, Wichita State was 13th at 900 and Old Dominion was 14th at 904.

The Hokies return to action Oct. 8-10, as they travel to Macon, Georgia to compete in the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside Golf Club. The Brickyard annually attracts one of the top fields in collegiate golf and this year’s field will include defending SEC champion Georgia, defending ACC champion Georgia Tech and defending national champion Augusta State.
