MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a two-round total of eight-over-par 584 and is in seventh place entering the final round of the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va., on Monday. The event is be played on the par 71, 6,947-yard Manakin Course at Hermitage.
The Hokies shot an 11-over-par 299 in the morning round, before improving to a three-under-par 285 in the afternoon’s second round.
Senior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) is tied for 19th place at one-over-par 145. He is eight strokes behind co-leaders Harold Varner of East Carolina and Nate McCoy of Iowa State.
Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) is tied for 24th at 146 and junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) and senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) are tied for 27th place at 147. Freshman Blake Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) is tied for 50th place at 151.
Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) is playing the event as an individual and is tied with Eckstein at 145. He is the low individual not competing with a team in the event and his second-round four-under-par 67 was the Hokie’s low round of the day and is tied for the low round of the tournament on Monday.
UNC Wilmington leads the tournament at 12-under-par 564, seven strokes ahead of East Carolina. Richmond and Wake Forest are tied for third at 574 and Charlotte and UNC Greensboro are tied for fifth at 583, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Liberty is eighth at 586, Iowa State is ninth at 588 and host VCU is 10th at 589. James Madison is 11th at 592, Mercer is 12th at 602 and Wichita State and Old Dominion are tied for 13th at 604.
The final round will begin at 8:45 a.m. with a shotgun start.
