BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will travel to the state capital to compete in the VCU Shootout in the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va., on Monday and Tuesday. The event will be played on the par 71, 6,947-yard Manakin Course at Hermitage.

The Hokies finished third at the Marshall Invitational two weeks ago. Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) led the Hokies with a seventh place individual finish.

Moyers will play in the top spot for the Hokies, following his strong showing at Marshall. Moyers competed in the 2010 U.S. Amateur this past summer and was the Hokies’ leader in scoring average as a freshman.

Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) will return to his hometown in the second position for the Hokies. Chalkley finished in a tied for 12th at Marshall. Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will play third for the Hokies and a pair of seniors, Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) and Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) round out the top five. Fellow senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) will be competing in the event as an individual.

Bailey won the 2010 Valentine Invitational on this same course at the Hermitage C.C., in late August, firing a three-round total of seven-under-par 209 to claim a three-stroke victory over former University of Richmond golfer Jordan Utley. Bailey was one of seven Hokies in the event and six Tech golfers finished in the top 12. Sophomore Jacob Everts and Chalkley tied for seventh place at 215. Green was the 36-hole leader and finished tied with Redmond for 10th place at 216 and Eckstein was tied for 12th at 218.

The Hokies tied for fourth in last season’s event and Redmond recorded his best-ever finish for the Hokies, as he posted a three-round total of one-over-par 217 and tied for fourth place.

The field for this year’s tournament includes Charlotte, Richmond, East Carolina, Iowa State, James Madison, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Liberty, VCU, Mercer, Wake Forest, Old Dominion, Wichita State and the Hokies. Six teams in the field qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2010.
