HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Virginia Tech golf team shot a record-setting final round of 13-under-par 271 and finished in third place at the 41st annual Marshall Invitational at the 6,456-yard, par 71 Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia on Tuesday.
The Hokies third round of 271 broke a 41-year old tournament and final round record for low score. Tech set the record in their round, which was tied later in the day by Xavier. Tech finished the event with a three-round total of 14-under-par 838.
Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) fired a final round 65 and finished with a total of six-under-par 207 and tied for seventh place. The 65 was a collegiate career low for Moyers. He finished 10 strokes behind Sebastian MacLean of Xavier, who set a new tournament record with a 16-under-par 197.
Making his collgiate debut, freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) tied for 12th with a three-round total of 208. Seniors Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) and Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) tied for 23rd at 212 and junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) finished tied for 40th at 215. The Hokies’ high score for Tuesday’s third round was Redmond’s one-under-par 70.
Two Hokies played the event as individuals. Redshirt freshman Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) made a successful collegiate debut with a three-round total of even-par 213 and finished tied for 32nd place. Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) finished tied for 34th at 214.
Ohio State won the tournament for a record 18th time with a three-round tournament record total of 32-under-par 820, seven strokes ahead of runner-up Xavier and 18 strokes better than the Hokies. Wright State was fourth at 844, Richmond was fifth at 845 and Miami of Ohio was sixth at 846. Eastern Kentucky was seventh at 848 and host Marshall, William & Mary, Toledo and Austin Peay tied for eighth at 853. Northern Illinois was 12th at 855, Bowling Green was 13th at 860, Cleveland State was 14th at 864 and Ohio was 15th at 873.
A total of seven individual or team records were broken during the tournament. The Hokies return to action in two weeks, when they travel to Richmond to take part in the VCU Shootout at the Manakin Course of the Hermitage Country Club.
