Hokies open season at Marshall Invitational
Tech begins fall slate in West Virginia

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech golf team will open the 2010-11 season as it travels to West Virginia to compete in the 41st annual Marshall Invitational at the 6,523 yard, par 71 Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia on Monday and Tuesday.

The Hokies will field a team that mixes experience with youth as they begin the 2010 fall slate. Tech will also take two individual competitors to play in the event.

Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) will play in the first spot for the Hokies. Bailey advanced as an individual to the 2010 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships last spring at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee. He was second on the team in scoring average as a junior.

Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) will play number-two for the Hokies. He led the team in scoring average as a freshman and competed in the 2010 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship at the Home Course in Dupont, Washington in August.

Senior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) will play third for the Hokies and freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) will make his collegiate debut in the fourth spot. Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will play fifth for the Hokies.

Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) and redshirt freshman Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) will play the event as individuals. This will also be MacDonald’s first collegiate event.

This is the first time the Hokies have played in this event since the 1970s. Tech was the runner-up in the 1972 rain-shortened event, when the Hokies’ John Minor won the tournament as an individual. The tournament will see 36 holes of action on Monday, followed by an 18-hole final round on Tuesday. Tech will be grouped with Miami of Ohio, Eastern Kentucky and host Marshall on Monday.

There are no live stats available for this 15-team event, but a daily wrap-up will be available on hokiesports.com.
