BLACKSBURG, Va. – Only one change in the regular season slate appears on the 2010-11 Virginia Tech golf schedule, as the Hokies begin their quest for a fifth consecutive NCAA appearance.

“Our team looks forward to the challenge that our 2010-11 schedule presents, including defending our title at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in the spring” head coach Jay Hardwick said. “As in the past, this year’s schedule will be one of the most demanding in the country, with the goal of preparing our team for postseason competition. We have added one new event, the season-opening Marshall Invitational, and return to a variety of demanding venues that will certainly test our players. We always strive to compete against, and ultimately to succeed against, the best teams in the nation and this season’s schedule once again gives our team that opportunity.”

Tech begins play on Sept. 13-14 at the Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia. This is the only new event on the 2010-11 slate for the Hokies. This marks the earliest in an academic year the Hokies have opened their season since opening Sept. 12, 2006 at Inverness.

The Hokies return to the Richmond area on Sept. 27-28 at the VCU Shootout on the Manakin Course of the Hermitage Country Club. The Hokies will then travel to Macon, Ga., on Oct. 8-10 to compete in the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship at the Brickyard at Riverside Golf Course, hosted by Mercer. One week later, on Oct. 15-17, Virginia Tech competes in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges. Tech won the tournament in 2007. Tech wraps up the fall season at the Bridgestone Invitational hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Forest Oaks Golf Club on Oct. 23-24.

In what has become one of collegiate golf’s top events, the Hokies will open the spring portion of the schedule at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan on Feb. 20-22. The next event on Tech’s schedule will be March 11-13 at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate at the Pinehurst Resort’s Number 6 Course. The Hokies won the event in 2010, defeating Old Dominion by four strokes.

Following Pinehurst, the Hokies will once again play the Furman Invitational and the Administaff/Augusta State Invitational in late March and early April, to wrap up the regular season. Tech will compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference Golf Championship at the Old North State Golf Club in Baden Lake, N.C., on April 22-24.

The Hokies will host an NCAA Regional at the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech on May 19-21. The regional will mark the first collegiate event hosted by the Hokies at the course, which is generally considered one of the top collegiate-owned courses in the country.

The Hokies return all five starters from last year’s team that advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional at the Warren Golf Club in Notre Dame, Indiana, in May. The Hokies will welcome one new player, Bryce Chalkley, plus Marc MacDonald, who redshirted the 2009-10, will begin playing this season.
