Huge wins Washington Metropolitan Amateur

Maclain Huge won the Washington Metropolitan Amateur, the major championship of the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association, Sunday at Columbia Country Club. in Bethesda, Md.

On Thursday, Huge, a rising sophomore from Lovettesville, Va., was one of 32 players to advance from stroke play into match play. He won two matches on Friday and two more on Saturday. In the quarterfinals on Saturday morning, Huge won three of the last four holes to erase a two-down deficit and win one up on the 18th hole.

Down early in the 36-hole finals match on Sunday, Huge birdied five holes in a row and six of the last seven to take a 1 up lead after the morning 18 holes. He maintained his lead throughout the afternoon and closed out the match with a chip-in birdie on the 34th hole, to defeat University of Maryland assistant golf coach Steve Delmar, a former professional, 3 & 2 for the title.
