Virginia Tech golfer Bryce Chalkley carded a 36-hole total of three-under-par 137 and tied for medalist honors with Zachary Bauchou at the 100th VSGA Amateur Championship at The Homestead’s Cascades Course on Wednesday afternoon.
Chalkley, a rising senior from Richmond, shot a final round three-under-par 67 to go with his 70 from Tuesday to tie the 17-year-old Bauchou for first place in the stroke play portion of the championship. Chalkley posted seven birdies and four bogeys on Wednesday.
Chalkley birdied the final two holes to share medalist honors. He nearly chipped in for eagle from behind the green at the par-5 17th hole and hit his tee shot to within two feet at the par-3 finishing hole for a tap-in birdie. Chalkley made the semifinals of the 2011 championship at The Virginian in Bristol and advanced to match play last year at Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach.
Chalkley’s Hokie teammate, Mikey Moyers, also advanced to match play, as he carded a two-day total of one-under-par 139 and tied for third place overall. The Stanardsville native, who completed his Tech career this spring, also shot a three-under-par 67 on Wednesday.
Moyers set the championship’s 36-hole stroke play qualifying scoring record of 12-under-par 132 at Cedar Point Country Club in 2009 before being eliminated in the round of 16 in match play.
At the conclusion of stroke play, six players at nine-over 149 vied for three spots in the match play field in extra holes. Nick Tremps, Dylan Jensen and Tim Ritter advanced to the match play portion of the championship.
Both the first and second rounds of match play are set for Thursday, June 27, followed by the quarterfinals and semifinals on Friday, June 28 and the scheduled 36-hole final on Saturday, June 29.
Chalkley is the second seed in match play and will face Dylan Jensen of Ridgeway and Longwood University at 8 a.m., on Thursday morning, beginning at the 10th tee. Moyers is the fourth seed and will face Connor Walters of Salem at 8:32 a.m., from the first tee.
