Huge struggles in opening round of U.S. Amateur

Maclain Huge, an incoming freshman for the Hokies, shot an opening round eight-over-par 79 and is tied for 255th place at the 112th U.S. Amateur Golf Championship. The championship is being played at the Cherry Hills Country Club and the Common Ground Golf Course in the Denver, Colorado area.

Huge, playing the Cherry Hills course on Monday morning, went out in 42, before posting at 37 on the back nine. Huge played in the first group of the day at Cherry Hills. He was grouped with Justin Holyszko of Bay City, Michigan and Korean Yi Keun Chang.

The trio will tee off from the 10th hole at Common Ground at 12:15 p.m. MDT on Tuesday afternoon. The field of 311 will participate in 36 holes of stroke play before the top 64 players advance to six rounds of match play. The event will conclude with a 36-hole championship match.
