De Jonge to play in World Cup
The Notebook

Virginia Tech golfing great Brendon de Jonge has been selected to the Zimbabwe national team that will compete in the World Cup later this month in China.

The World Cup, a biennial event that matches two-man teams based on the Official World Golf Ranking, will be played Nov. 24-27, 2011 at Mission Hills in Shenzhen, China. The format will be 72 holes of stroke play, with four ball play for the first and third rounds and foursomes for the second and fourth rounds. In all, 28 countries will field teams in the tournament.

De Jonge’s partner will be Bruce McDonald, a professional on the developmental tours, who just advanced to second stage in the European Tour Qualifying. De Jonge finished 76th on the PGA Tour’s money list this season, with $1,241,326 in earnings.

De Jonge earned the honor by placing inside the Top 100 players in world ranking as of the deadline - after the Wyndham Championship - and as so, had the option to select his own partner.  He and McDonald have been friends for years and McDonald has caddied for de Jonge the last two years in the Greenbrier Classic.

Matt Kuchar and Gary Woodland are representing the United States.  The event will be televised by the Golf Channel.
