The Notebook

Virginia Tech golfer Mikey Moyers shot a 36-hole total of five-under-par 139 and easily won medalist honors in sectional qualifying for the 2010 US Amateur Golf Championship. The qualifying event was held Monday at the 6,862-yard, par 72 Birdwood Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Moyers, a rising sophomore from Stanardsville, Virginia, carded a two-under-par 70 in the morning session, before following it up by equaling an afternoon-best score of 69.

This will be Moyers’ first appearance in the US Amateur. The championship will be played Aug. 23-29 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington.

Moyers was one of two players to advance from Birdwood. Virginia head coach Bowen Sargent defeated Matthew Neeley and Jeremy Wells in a two-hole playoff to claim the other spot in the Amateur. Teammate Garland Green, a rising senior from Tazewell, Virginia, shot 147 on Monday.
