Hokies to face Washington in Boardwalk Classic
Meeting part of Dec. 15 quadruple-header at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City
June 4, 2018
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The Virginia Tech Hokies will face the Washington Huskies in the first-ever Boardwalk Classic presented by Citi, a newly developed college basketball showcase by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) of Atlantic City, to be held at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday, December 15, 2018.
In addition to the Virginia Tech – Washington contest, the one-day quadruple-header will feature Temple University (American Athletic) vs. Davidson College (Atlantic 10), Iona College (MAAC) vs. Princeton University (Ivy League) and Penn State (Big Ten) vs North Carolina State University (ACC).
This will mark the second consecutive season that the Hokies and Huskies will meet on the hardwood. Tech defeated Washington, 103-79, last November in the 2K Classic in Madison Square Garden. The Hokies hold a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to 1923.
“Atlantic City has long been a popular destination on the east coast with wonderful hotels, dining and entertainment. We are very excited to host the inaugural Boardwalk Classic at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City this December,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. “The eight teams participating and the fans who travel with them are sure to have a fantastic experience in this unique venue.”
"We are extremely excited to compete in the Basketball Hall of Fame Boardwalk Classic,” Virginia Tech head coach Buzz Williams said. “Washington has an outstanding team that will be a challenging opponent for our squad. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is such an important part of our sport and it is great to join them in this event. We hope to continue to help the Hall of Fame celebrate basketball’s moments and people. The Hokies are looking forward to participating in this event.”
Boardwalk Hall, formerly known as Atlantic City Convention Hall, is the home to the Miss America Pageant. The facility has hosted numerous events since opening in 1940, including the 1964 Liberty Bowl, the 1964 Democratic National Convention, countless concerts and matches in the 1996 Federation Cup tennis tournament.
The quadruple-header is another signature event created by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) of Atlantic City’s ongoing programming alliance with IMG.
“The CRDA is pleased to welcome back the best of college basketball to Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall,” added CRDA Board Chairman Robert Mulcahy. “Working with the Hall of Fame and IMG, this event brings to the resort regional and national basketball powers, as well as a national television audience.”
Located in Springfield, Massachusetts, the birthplace of basketball, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame promotes and preserves the game of basketball at every level – professional, collegiate, men and women.
