WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind good shot selection and points off of turnovers, the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team led wire-to-wire and defeated Wake Forest, 83-75, at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Wednesday night.
Redshirt junior Ahmed Hill led The Hokies (13-4, 2-2 ACC) on the night, registering a team-high 21 points, fours rebounds and two steals versus the Demon Deacons (8-8, 1-3 ACC). Tech shot 50 percent from floor, including 43 percent from 3-point land.
Jumping out to an 11-3 lead heading into the first media timeout behind six points from Justin Bibbs and five from Chris Clarke, Tech kept its momentum in the early going. Hill drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Hokies’ advantage to 21-7, forcing a Demon Deacon timeout.
Tech stifled Wake Forest on the defensive end, forcing consecutive shot-clock violations midway through the first half. The Hokies held the Deacs to shooting 13-of-35 (37 percent) from the field the opening frame, leading 45-30.
Wake Forest responded out of the gate, though, scoring the first nine points of the second half, cutting the deficit to single digits. However, Tech went on a run of its own, tallying nine-straight points to extend its lead to 54-39.
Wake made runs to trim it to a two-possession game, but the Hokies would always respond on the following possession to keep its cushion, winning 83-75.
Doral Moore led the charge for the Demon Deacons, tallying his fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
NOTES
• The Hokies had five players in double figures, as Hill had 21 points, Bibbs tallied 18, Clarke posted 14, Justin Robinson put in 13 points and Kerry Blackshear Jr. recorded 10. It marks the first time Tech has had five scorers own 10 or more points since its matchup with Ole Miss on Dec. 2.
• Tech has now hit at least 10 3-pointers in eight games this season.
• Hill’s 21 points are the most for the Georgia native in a conference game. He hit five shots from downtown, his most in a league game since Jan. 5, 2017, versus NC State.
• Tech swiped seven steals and scored 20 points off of turnovers, marking the second-straight game the Hokies have had 20 or points off of the opponents' mistakes.
STAT OF THE GAME
• Tech buried 12 3-pointers, which is the most for the squad versus an ACC opponent in the regular season since Feb. 25, 2017, against Boston College.
