NEW YORK, N.Y. – Virginia Tech lost to Saint Louis, 77-71, in men’s college basketball action Thursday night at Madison Square Garden in the 2K Classic. The Hokies fall to 2-1 overall, while the Billikens improve to 3-0.
The game was close throughout the first half before SLU went on a 18-10 run in the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 36-29 advantage into the intermission. The Billikens stretched the lead to as many as 12 points in the second half, before Tech was able to cut that lead to four points multiple times in the second half, including a 75-71 SLU lead with one second remaining in the game.
Ahmed Hill led all scorers with a career-high 26 points for the Hokies. Justin Bibbs, seeing his first action of the season added 15 points and Kerry Blackshear Jr., added 10 points. Chris Clarke grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for Tech. Javon Bess led Saint Louis with 22 points and Jordan Goodwin added 19 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Tech was out rebounded 43-33 and was out shot 40.4 percent to 47.4 percent. SLU scored 44 of its 77 points in the paint and limited the Hokies to just four points in transition.
Tech returns to action on Friday night, as they face Washington in the consolation game of the 2K Classic. Tip off is 5 p.m. and the game will be televised by ESPN2.
