Hokies fall to Wisconsin, 84-74, in NCAA first round action

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Virginia Tech lost to Wisconsin, 84-74, in the first round of the 2017 NCAA East Regional at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York on Thursday night. The Hokies, the ninth seed in the East, fall to 22-11 overall, while the eighth seed Badgers improve to 26-9 overall.
The game was close throughout, as neither team led by double digits until the final second of the game. Wisconsin led 34-30 at the intermission, after the Hokies led by as many as four points in the first half.
Tech was able to cut the Wisconsin lead to as few as one point five times in the second half, but could not tie or take the lead. Tech cut the lead to 74-73 on a pair of free throws by Zach LeDay, with 2:25 remaining, but Wisconsin made their free throws in the final two minutes and came away with the 84-74 victory.
Tech outshot the Badgers, 46.9 percent to 43.3 percent and made 21 of 26 free throw attempts, but were out rebounded by Wisconsin, 37-25, including 17-6 on the offensive glass.
LeDay led the Hokies in scoring in his final game at Tech, with 23 points. Ty Outlaw added 16 points and Justin Robinson had 11 points and six assists. Senior Seth Allen closed out his Virginia Tech career with 10 points and six assists, despite playing most of the game with a toe injury to his right foot.
The loss concludes the Hokies’ 2016-17 season. This was the Hokies’ first NCAA appearance since 2007.
