Outlaw's career night leads Tech to upset of Miami
The junior scored a career-high 24 points and hit a school-record eight 3-pointers in the Hokies' 66-61 win

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech forward Ty Outlaw scored a career-high 24 points, as the Hokies knocked off No. 25 Miami 66-61 in an ACC game played Monday night at Virginia Tech Carilion Court.
The win marked the third straight and the fifth in the past six games for the Hokies, who moved to 21-8 overall, 10-7 in the ACC. They also moved to 15-1 at home on the season.
Outlaw, who was averaging 5.0 points per game, set a school record with eight 3-pointers, breaking the previous mark of seven set by Justin Bibbs earlier this season and former players Malcolm Delaney, Zabian Dowdell and Wally Lancaster. He went 8 of 11 from the floor – 8 of 10 from beyond the arc.
Outlaw is averaging 14 points per game and shooting 69 percent from the floor in Chris Clarke’s absence. He has started the past five games in place of Clarke, who tore his ACL in the Virginia game on Feb 12.
“We’re deep into the season, and I’m getting more minutes,” Outlaw said. “It’s a rhythm thing. That’s why they recruited me to come here – because I can shoot. My team has confidence in me. I don’t see why I wouldn’t make 8 for 10.”
“He’s a good player, isn’t he?” Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams said. “I like guys that can do multiple things. At this level, you have to be elite in some category. Obviously, he’s elite as a shooter.”
Miami (20-9, 10-7), making its first visit into The Associated Press top-25 poll this season, led by 50-48 with just under seven minutes to go, but the Hokies went on a 12-4 run, taking the lead for good.
Tech scored on five straight possessions, with the final five points coming on a 3-pointer by Outlaw and a dunk by Zach LeDay that gave the Hokies a 60-54 lead with 2:11 remaining. Tech then made 6 of 8 from the free-throw line in the final 1:05 to hold off the Hurricanes.
Behind Outlaw, Virginia Tech shot 51.4 percent (19 of 37) and hit 10 3-pointers. Seth Allen added 12 points, including four key free throws in the final minute.
Anthony Lawrence led Miami with 18 points.
The Hokies close the regular season with a home game against Wake Forest on Saturday. Virginia Tech has beaten the Demon Deacons three straight times by a combined 10 points.
Other Notes
• Tech has made at least 10 3-pointers in five straight games. The Hokies lead the ACC in 3-point field-goal percentage.
• Tech beat a ranked foe for the third time this season. That marks the second time in school history that the Hokies have beaten three ranked foes in a season.
• Outlaw has started 10 games this season – more than leading scorers LeDay and Allen combined (8).
• LeDay scored just seven points in the win, which snapped his streak of scoring in double figures at 23 consecutive games. That was the longest such streak in the ACC. LeDay has scored in double figures in 27 of 29 games.
