Hokies fall at Miami, 74-68

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Virginia Tech lost at Miami, 74-68, in ACC men’s basketball action on Wednesday night in the Watsco Center. The Hokies drop to 16-7 overall and 5-6 in conference play, while the Hurricanes improve to 16-7 overall and 6-5 in ACC action.
The game was close throughout the first half, with neither team leading by more than four points through the first 19 minutes. With the score tied at 34-34 with 1:06 remaining before intermission, the Hurricanes scored the final six points of the half to take a 40-34 lead into the break.
Miami pushed the lead to as many as 17 points in the second half, but the Hokies made a run in the final four and a half minutes. Tech got the deficit to within six points three times in the final minute of play, but could get no closer and Miami took the 74-68 victory.
Justin Robinson led five Hokies in double figures with 15 points. Chris Clarke added 13 points and Ahmed Hill scored 13 points. Seth Allen chipped in 10 points and Zach LeDay recorded his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Hurricanes’ Davon Reed led all scorers with 18 points.
The Hokies outshot the Canes, 47.8 percent to 45.3 percent and battled even on the boards, at 32 rebounds apiece. Tech also made 20 of 25 free throw attempts, compared to 9-13 for Miami.
Tech returns to action on Sunday night, as they host arch-rival Virginia in Cassell Coliseum. The game, to be shown on ESPNU, will tip off at 6:30 p.m. The game will be the annual Maroon Effect game, as Tech fans are encouraged to wear maroon when attending the contest, or purchase the official Maroon Out shirt at the University Bookstore or the Cassell concourse. The game has already been announced as the team’s fourth sell out of the season.
