Allen, Bibbs help Tech pull away from BC
The duo each scored 18 points in the Hokies' 85-79 victory on an evening when Buzz Willliams won his 200th game as a head coach

BLACKSBURG – Seth Allen and Justin Bibbs each scored 18 points to lift Virginia Tech to an 85-79 victory over Boston College in an ACC game played Sunday night at Virginia Tech Carilion Court.
The win marked the Hokies’ third in the past four games, and they moved to 16-5 overall, 5-4 in the ACC. BC fell to 9-13 overall, 2-7 in league play.
Tech’s win also marked the 200th head coaching victory for Tech head coach Buzz Williams, who has amassed those 200 over stops at New Orleans, Marquette and Tech.
“I went to an NAIA school, and I was upset that I thought the ceiling on my career was to be an assistant at Navarro [a junior college in Texas],” Williams said. “I just wanted to be an assistant at OCU [Oklahoma City University]. The only reason that is has worked out is that each step along the way, God gave me just enough to enlarge my paradigm that I could absorb it in the right way.
“Everything that has transpired in my career, whether it be as an assistant or head coach, has been way beyond anything that I dreamed.”
The Hokies never trailed in this one, hitting 10 of their first 11 shots from the floor, including five 3-pointers in building an 18-point, first-half lead. But the game wasn’t exactly a breeze.
BC cut the lead to 66-65 on a 3-pointer by Ky Bowman with 9:17 left before the Hokies went on a 7-0 run, pushing the lead to 73-65 on a Justin Robinson basket with 5:20 remaining. They weren’t threatened again.
“Down the stretch, we just go stops,” Allen said. “We got three stops in a row. We locked down. We sat down, and we said, ‘They’re not scoring.’ There were a couple of times when we stopped them and they got the offensive rebounds, but that’s on us. It really challenged us, but I think we respond well to adversity.”
Allen and Bibbs combined to hit 11 of 16 from the floor, including six 3-pointers, for the Hokies, who scored on seven of their final 10 possessions. Allen hit 5 of 7 from the floor, while Bibbs hit 6 of 9.
Zach LeDay scored 17 points for Tech, which shot 59.1 percent (26 of 44) and hit 12 3-pointers.
Jordan Chatman scored a career-high 30 points for the Eagles, who have lost five straight.
At the halfway point of the ACC schedule, Tech finds itself with a 5-4 conference record. That may not seem all that great, but seven teams in the league have .500 conference records or worse.
“Given how the power of the conference is, I’m happy with where we are,” Allen said. “I like the team’s grit and toughness. I think we play really hard and really together as one unit offensively and defensively.
“We do a good job of responding to adversity. A couple of games that could have been losses that were wins, teams went on late runs and we could have sat down and put our heads down. But we stepped up to the plate.”
The Hokies hit the road to face in-state rival Virginia on Wednesday night. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.
