CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia Tech fell at No. 9/6 North Carolina, 91-72, in ACC men’s basketball action Thursday night at the Dean. E Smith Center. The Hokies fall to 15-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while the Tar Heels improve to 19-3 overall and 7-1 in ACC action.
The Hokies started strong and jumped out to a 13-7 lead with 15:43 remaining in the first half on basket by Seth Allen. The Tar Heels took the lead on the strength of their rebounding and entered the intermission with a 44-33 lead. In the second half, UNC continued to control the boards and took a 26-point lead with 5:57 remaining, but the Hokies cut the final margin to 91-72 at the end.
UNC out rebounded the Hokies, 43-22, including 19-4 on the offensive boards. Tech shot 51.0 percent from the floor, shooting 50 percent or better in each half.
Allen led three Hokies in double figures with 19 points and five assists. Backcourt mate Justin Robinson added 17 points and seven assists and Zach LeDay scored 12 points. UNC’s Justin Jackson led all scorers with 26 points.
The Hokies return to action on Sunday night, as they host Boston College in Cassell Coliseum. The game, the Black Out Effect game, will tip off at 6:30 p.m. and will be shown nationally on ESPNU.
