Tech defeats Huskers, 66-53, to claim third place

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Virginia Tech outscored Nebraska, 43-27, in the second half to post a 66-53 victory over the Huskers in the third place game of the 2016 Wooden Legacy at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on Sunday afternoon.

The Hokies, now 5-1, on the season, trailed 26-23 at the intermission, but took the lead early in the second half, spurred by a pair of dunks by Zach LeDay. Tech took the lead for good with 12:03 remaining at 35-33, on a lay-up by Seth Allen. The Hokies took its first double-digit lead at 47-37 on a three-pointer from Justin Robinson. The Huskers, now 4-2 overall, were able to cut the lead to 56-50 with 1:34 remaining, but Tech finished the game on 10-3 run for the 66-53 final.

LeDay led the Hokies with 19 points and nine rebounds, while also adding four assists and three blocked shot. Ahmed Hill scored all 12 of his points in the second half for the Hokies. Tai Webster led the Cornhuskers with 23 points and eight rebounds.

Tech shot just 29.6 percent from the floor in the first half, but made 13 of 23 shots after the break, to shoot 42.0 percent for the game. Tech held Nebraska to just 29.8 percent from the field for the game, including four of 21 from three-point range, for 19.0 percent. After shooting 37.5 percent from the line in the first half, Tech missed its first free throw of the second half and proceeded to make the remaining 13 attempts, shooting 72.7 percent for the game.

With the win, the Hokies take third place in the Wooden Legacy. Tech continues on this road trip on Wednesday night, as they travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to face the University of Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The game will tip at 7 p.m. ET and be televised by ESPN2.
