Hokies fall to Texas A&M, 68-65 at Wooden Legacy

FULLERTON, Calif. – Virginia Tech dropped its first game of the season, 68-65, to Texas A&M in the semifinal of the Wooden Legacy Friday afternoon at Titan Gym in Fullerton, California. Tech is now 4-1 on the season, while the Aggies also stand at 4-1 overall.

The Hokies led most of the contest and took a 38-25 lead into intermission, as the Hokies finished the half on a 12-0 run in the final 4:23. Justin Robinson scored the Hokies’ last four points of the first half, including a layup with three seconds remaining in the first half.

In the second half, Tech stretched its lead to 53-36 with 14:56 remaining on a three-pointer by Ahmed Hill. The Aggies began to chip away at the lead, primarily on their rebounding advantage and tied the score at 63-63 with 3:34 remaining on a jumper by Robert Williams. The Aggies took the lead for good on a three-pointer by D.J. Hogg with 2:03 remaining. Zach LeDay cut the lead to 66-65 with 1:39 remaining, but Hogg hit a jumper to push the lead back to three and the Aggies held on for the 68-65 victory.

Hill led all scorers with 18 points. He tied his career high by making 6-of-11 from three-point range. Robinson added 14 points and Seth Allen came off the bench with 10 points. Hogg led the Aggies with 17 points and Williams added 13 points off the bench.

The Hokies forced the Aggies into 13 turnovers, but Texas A&M out rebounded Tech, 49-30, including a 15-6 advantage on the offensive glass.

The Hokies will wind up its play in the Wooden Legacy on Sunday against Nebraska. Sunday’s game will be played at 4 p.m. ET and be televised by ESPNU.
