Hokies announce 2016-17 men's basketball schedule
Appearance in the Wooden Leagacy in Anaheim and home games versus UVa, Duke and Syracuse highlight slate

BLACKSBURG, Va. – A challenging home slate, plus an appearance in the Wooden Legacy and the always tough Atlantic Coast Conference foes highlight the 2016-17 Virginia Tech men’s basketball schedule. The Hokies and the ACC announced the composite men’s basketball schedule on Monday.

“Our schedule this season will challenge our team,” head coach Buzz Williams said. “The trip to the West Coast for the Wooden Legacy will test us with its tremendous field and then we travel directly to play an outstanding Michigan team in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. This season, we also begin a home-and-home series with Mississippi. There are no ‘days off’ in the ACC. This league keeps getting stronger and stronger each season and in order to compete, we must get better every day.”

The Hokies will play 17 home games this season. Highlighting the home non-conference schedule is the beginning of a home-and-home with SEC foe Mississippi on Sunday, Dec. 11 at noon on ESPNU. The return game will be next season in Oxford.

The Hokies will open the 2016-17 schedule on Friday, Nov. 11 against Maine at 9 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. Tech will face High Point in Cassell on Nov. 15, before hosting traditional rival VMI on Nov. 19.

Tech will travel to Southern California to compete in the Wooden Legacy on Nov. 24-27. The Hokies will play New Mexico on Thanksgiving afternoon on ESPN and either Texas A&M or Cal. State Northridge on Friday night, both nights being played in Fullerton, California. The tournament’s final day will be played on Sunday in the Honda Center in Anaheim, home of the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. All games in the event will be televised by the ESPN family of networks.

Immediately following the Wooden Legacy, the Hokies will travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan to take on the University of Michigan in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The game will be played on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.

The Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum on Wednesday, Dec. 7, as they host Maryland-Eastern Shore. Following the Dec. 11 game with Ole Miss, Tech entertains The Citadel on Saturday, Dec. 17 and Charleston Southern on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Tech closes out the non-conference portion of the schedule on Dec. 28, as they host UMBC, coached by former Hokie assistant Ryan Odom.

The Hokies open the ACC regular season on Saturday, Dec. 31, as they host Duke in Cassell Coliseum at noon on ESPN2. In addition to the Blue Devils, home opponents include Syracuse, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Boston College, Clemson, Miami and Wake Forest, along with the annual match-up with arch-rival Virginia on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

Road foes for the Hokies, in addition to Virginia on Feb. 1, are NC State, Florida State, Clemson, national runner-up North Carolina, Miami, Pittsburgh, Louisville and Boston College.

The ACC Office will update times and additional television coverage at a later date.

The Hokies will have at least 24 games televised and all 18 of the Hokies’ ACC games will be televised this season. All conference games carried on an ESPN network also will be available on WatchESPN. All conference games carried on the ACC Network, ACC Network Extra or a regional sports network also will be available on ESPN3.
