Hokies to visit Michigan in ACC/Big Ten Challenge
Teams meet for the first time since 2002

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech will travel to Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the 18th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Game time and ESPN network designation will be announced at a later date.

The Hokies and Wolverines will be meeting for the sixth time, but the first time as a part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Michigan holds a 4-1 record in the series, which dates back to 1974. The Hokies won the last meeting between to two schools, 65-53, in the 2002 Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, USVI. Tech lost to Michigan, 84-63, in its only trip to Ann Arbor, in the 1974 Michigan Tournament.

Virginia Tech is 3-7 all-time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and 1-4 in road games in the Challenge. Tech lost its last road game in the Challenge, at Penn State, 61-58, in 2014. Tech fell to Northwestern, 81-79, in overtime in Cassell Coliseum in last year’s Challenge.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioner’s Cup. All 14 games will also be available via WatchESPN.

The Big Ten captured the Commissioner’s Cup in 2015 and 2014, winning eight of the 14 matchups both years. The two conferences split the previous two events, winning six Challenge games each in 2012 and 2013. The ACC won the first 10 Challenges (1999-2008), while the Big Ten won the next three (2009-2011). In the event of a tie, the Commissioner’s Cup remains with the conference that won the previous year. The ACC holds the 10-5-2 winning record in the previous 17 years.
