BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team will host the Princeton Tigers in the first round of the 2016 National Invitation Tournament. The two schools will meet in Cassell Coliseum on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPNU and tickets will go on sale on Monday at noon.
The Hokies, the third seed in the St. Bonaventure Bracket, are 19-14 overall and finished 10-8 and tied for seventh place in the ACC. Tech was the sixth seed and received a first-round bye in the ACC Tournament and defeated Florida State, 96-85, in the second round before falling to No. 11 Miami in the quarterfinal. Princeton is 22-6 overall and was 12-2 in the Ivy League.
The winner of the Virginia Tech – Princeton game will play the winner of the BYU – UAB game. The winners of the four brackets will advance to the NIT Final Four in Madison Square Garden later this month. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Hokies and Tigers.
This is the Hokies’ 13th time in the NIT, where they have compiled a 24-10 overall record. The Hokies won the NIT championship in 1973 and 1995 and finished third in 1984. This is the Hokies’ first post-season and NIT appearance since the 2011 NIT, when Tech defeated Bethune-Cookman in the first round before falling to Wichita State in the second round. Tech has played its last 10 NIT games in Cassell Coliseum, with a record of 6-4.
Tickets will go on sale on Monday, March 14 at noon in the Virginia Tech Athletics Ticket Office in Lane Stadium and on-line at: http://vthoki.es/NITTix. Ticket prices are $15 for adults and $5 for students and children under 18.
