WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech Hokies defeated Wake Forest, 81-74, in ACC men’s basketball action on Sunday night in the LJVM Coliseum. With the win, the Hokies secure a first-round bye in the upcoming 2016 ACC Tournament.
Tech improves to 16-13 on the season and 8-8 in conference action. Wake Forest falls to 11-18 overall and 2-15 in ACC play. The Hokies have now won three consecutive conference games, the last two on the road.
The game was close throughout, with neither team leading by more than nine points. The Hokies took a 37-36 lead into the intermission and was able to hold the lead through most of the second half. Tech stretched the lead out to nine points with 4:58 remaining, on a free throw by Kerry Blackshear Jr.
Wake Forest cut the Tech lead to 67-64 under three minutes remaining, but Justin Robinson hit a big three from in front of the Hokie bench to put Tech and Justin Bibbs followed with a pair of free throws to put the Hokies up 72-64 with 2:18 to play. The Hokies finished the game with its final eight points coming on free throws in the final minute.
Bibbs led all scorers with 22 points. Zach LeDay added 17 points and eight rebounds and Robinson and Seth Allen had 14 points each. Codi Miller-McIntyre led the Demon Deacons with 19 points.
Tech, which only shot three free throws in the first half, went to the line 30 times in the second half, making 23 of those attempts. The Hokies forced the Demon Deacons into 19 turnovers in the game, scoring 20 points off of those turnovers.
The win is the Hokies’ second road win of the week, marking the first time Tech has won back-to-back conference road games in a week since the final week in January in 2009. The win also assures the Hokies of a winning regular season. Tech finishes the road portion of the 2015-16 season with three road wins, the most since the 2010-11 season.
The Hokies complete the regular season with a pair of home games. First up is Wednesday night, as the Hokies host Pittsburgh, at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
