BLACKSBURG – Seth Allen scored 23 points and Justin Robinson keyed a game-ending run that propelled Virginia Tech to an 83-73 victory over Florida State in an ACC game played Saturday afternoon at Virginia Tech Carilion Court.
With the win, the Hokies moved to 14-13 overall, 6-8 in ACC action and they snapped a three-game losing streak to the Seminoles. Florida State, which lost its fourth straight game, fell to 16-11 overall, 6-9 in the ACC.
Allen scored 17 of his points in the second half, helping the Hokies rally from a 45-37 halftime deficit. But Robinson made the key plays.
The Hokies trailed 64-58 after Florida State’s Dwayne Bacon scored with 8:52 remaining. But Tech outscored the Seminoles 25-9 the remainder of the game.
The Hokies hit four of their 11 3-pointers in their game-ending stretch, including back-to-back 3’s from Robinson, who scored 10 of his 13 points in that span. Tech scored on 10 of its final 12 possessions. On its last possession, the Hokies simply ran out the clock.
Robinson hit a career-high three 3-pointers in the game and scored in double figures for the third straight game. He had made more than one 3-pointer in just one game this season.
“I thought they were big, but it was all set up by my teammates,” Robinson said. “They just got me a wide-open shot both times, so with that being said, I applaud my teammates.
“My teammates have been giving me confidence these last three games. Personally, their energy has been treating me well. My teammates are not relying on me, but giving me confidence. That’s a big confidence boost to me. I’m just proud of my teammates and how we battled and came back and won.”
“Justin has ‘little man syndrome,’ but he’s a lot smarter than people give him credit for,” Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams said. “I think he’s incredible competitive. Most guys who have ‘little man syndrome’ have an edge about them. Sometimes, it’s a negative edge, but he’s built in a positive way. He’s not scared.”
Allen, who came off the bench for the first time in the past 13 games, hit 7 of 11 from the floor, including four 3-pointers for Tech. He scored at least 20 points for the seventh time this season and reached double figures in scoring for the 21st time in 27 games.
The Hokies shot a season-best 52.8 percent (28 of 53) – including better than 60 percent in the second half. Jalen Hudson added 13 points, while both Justin Bibbs and Zach LeDay finished with 12.
The only negative for Tech on this day was an injury to Chris Clarke, who injured his left ankle while getting fouled with 9:38 left in the first half. Clarke, who was averaging 10.3 points and 7.1 rebounds, did not return and his status for Tuesday night’s game is unclear.
The Hokies have four games remaining and have at least played themselves into the discussion for a postseason bid.
“I think we’re a long way away from playing in any postseason tournament, but I do think winning today at least gives us hope and I think hope is the most valuable thing in life, if not in sport,” Williams said. “When you’re rewarded for your work, it gives you breath. How it all plays out … I don’t know. What are we, 1-6 on the road? I would say that Boston College will be favored on Tuesday just like Florida State was favored today.”
Florida State got 22 points from Dwayne Bacon and 14 from Xavier Rathan-Mayes.
Virginia Tech plays at Boston College on Tuesday. Tipoff is slated for 9 p.m.
