SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Virginia Tech lost in overtime, 68-60, at Syracuse on Tuesday night in the Carrier Dome in ACC men’s basketball action. With the loss, the Hokies fall to 12-11 overall and 4-6 in ACC play. Syracuse improves to 16-8 overall and 6-5 in league action.
The Hokies jumped out early and took a 30-24 lead into the intermission and led through much of the second half. Syracuse tied the game at the 9:54 mark of the second half. Tech was able to hold off the Orange for the remainder of the half, never relinquishing the lead, but when Justin Bibbs’ last-second jumper missed the mark, the game went to overtime. In the extra session, the Orange jumped out to an early lead and took the final, 68-60.
Bibbs led the Hokies with his second career double-double and his first of the season, scoring 16 points and tying a career-high with 11 rebounds. Zach LeDay added 13 points and Seth Allen scored 11 points for the Hokies. Michael Gbinije led four Syracuse players in double-figures with 17 points.
The Hokies outshot the Orange from the field, but Syracuse out rebounded Tech, 44-37. The Orange made 20-of-32 free throw attempts, while Tech was 7-of-13 from the line.
The Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum on Saturday, as they host Clemson. Game time is 4 p.m. and the game will be televised by regional sports networks.
