Hokies drop close one at Notre Dame, 83-81

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Virginia Tech lost at Notre Dame, 83-81, in ACC men’s basketball action Wednesday night at Purcell Pavilion. Tech falls to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the Fighting Irish improve to 13-5, 4-2 in league action.

Tech led through much of the game and held a 45-37 lead at intermission. An early Notre Dame tightened the game and neither team gained more than a four-point lead in the final five minutes.

Zach LeDay scored with 41 seconds remaining to cut the score to 83-81 and Notre Dame held for a late shot. Demetrius Jackson missed a shot with 10 seconds remaining and Shane Henry grabbed the rebound and passed to Seth Allen, who had a final three-point attempt rim out in the waning seconds and the Fighting Irish held on to the victory.

LeDay led the Hokies with 22 points and Allen added 20 points and a career-high eight assists. Justin Bibbs added 12 points and Shane Henry scored 11 points for the Hokies. Zach Auguste led the Irish with 22 points and 15 rebounds.

The Hokies shot 50.0 percent from the field, including 38.9 percent from three-point range. Notre Dame shot 50.9 percent from the field and out rebounded Tech, 35-27.

Tech returns to action on Sunday evening, as they host second-ranked North Carolina. The game tips at 6:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU.
