ATLANTA, Ga. – Virginia Tech fought back from a 15-point first half deficit to claim a 78-77 victory at Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon in McCamish Pavilion. With the win, the Hokies improve to 12-6 overall and 4-1 in ACC play, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 11-7 overall and 1-4 in league action.
The Hokies trailed throughout the first half and were behind 43-33 at the intermission, but opened the second half on an 11-2 run to get the game close, at 47-44. Georgia Tech pushed the lead back out to 10 points, 74-64, with 4:32 remaining, but Hokies went on a 13-1 run and took their first lead of the day with 58 seconds remaining on a jump shot by Zach LeDay.
The Yellow Jackets tied the game on their next possession, 77-77. The Hokies held for a final shot and Seth Allen went to the basket and was fouled with 3.4 seconds remaining. He hit one of two free throws and the Virginia Tech defense held off a final Georgia Tech drive to the basket and took home the 78-77 victory.
The win snapped an 18-game ACC road, losing skid for the Hokies, dating back to a win at Miami to open the 2013-14 ACC schedule. Tech is now 4-1 in league play for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
LeDay, who scored the Hokies’ first seven points of the contest, led Tech with 21 points and seven rebounds. Allen added 13 points, all in the second half and 11 points coming from the free throw line. Kerry Blackshear Jr., came off the bench to score 10 points and grab six rebounds. Marcus Georges-Hunt led the Yellow Jackets with 27 points.
The Hokies had a big advantage at the free throw line, making 28-of-36 attempts, including 23-27 in the second half. Virginia Tech shot 45.1 percent from the field.
The Hokies remain on the road, as they travel to Notre Dame on Wednesday night. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m., and be televised by regional sports networks.
