BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech suffered an 88-63 setback to West Virginia in a non-conference game at Virginia Tech Carilion Court on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss left the Hokies at 8-5 on the season. West Virginia, ranked No. 19 in The Associated Press poll, moved to 11-1 overall.
Jevon Carter scored 18 points to lead the Mountaineers, who won their fourth straight game. Carter hit 8 of 10 from the floor for the game, including a 3-pointer. Jaysean Paige added 17 points off the bench for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia used a 20-3 run spanning the two halves to take control. The Mountaineers scored the final five points of the first half and 15 of the game’s first 18 points in the second half. Carter’s basket with 16:24 remaining gave the Mountaineers a 61-39 lead, and they went on to lead by as many as 26. Carter scored 10 of the 20 in that run.
Tech cut the lead to 72-55 on two Seth Allen free throws with 8:22 remaining, but Tarik Phillip’s three-point play with 6:55 remaining and two Paige free throws with 6:18 to go pushed the lead to 77-55 and all but sealed it for the Mountaineers.
Shane Henry, who scored a career-high 12 points, led the Hokies, who committed 22 turnovers. Zach LeDay added 11 points, and Allen finished with 10
Tech begins ACC action this Saturday when it takes on NC State. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
