BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Virginia Tech lost to St. Joseph’s, 79-62, at the Barclays Center in men’s basketball action on Tuesday afternoon.
The game was part of an ACC-Atlantic 10 doubleheader in the arena. With the loss, the Hokies fall to 8-4 overall, while the Hawks improve to 9-2 on the season.
After the Hokies scored the game’s first basket, SJU went out to an 8-2 lead. The Hawks pushed the lead to as many as 14 points in the first half, before Tech cut the margin to 35-26 at the intermission. The Hokies then cut the lead to just six points, at 39-33 with 17:39 remaining on a three-pointer by Seth Allen, but could get no closer and SJU went on for the 17-point victory.
Allen led the Hokies with 18 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Zach LeDay recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Isaiah Miles scored 36 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and DeAndré Bembry added 22 points to lead the Hawks.
Tech held the Hawks to just 39.4 percent from the field in the game, but was beaten on the boards, 48-32, including 19 offensive rebounds. SJU scored 26 second-chance points and 22 points off turnovers.
The Hokies take the next week off for the holidays. Tech returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 30, as they host rival West Virginia in Cassell Coliseum. The game tips at noon and will be shown live on ESPNU. Virginia Tech announced earlier on Tuesday that the game is a sellout.
