NICEVILLE, Fla. – Virginia Tech defeated UAB, 82-77, in overtime in the consolation game of the Emerald Coast Classic on Saturday evening. The two-day event was played at Raider Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida.
With the win, the Hokies improve to 4-2 on the season. The Blazers are now 3-3 overall.
Tech used strong free throw shooting in the second half to comeback from 38-35 halftime deficit. The Hokies made 16-of-20 attempts from the line in the second half, including a stretch of 10 straight points. Devin Wilson made six consecutive free throws during that run.
The Hokies trailed 71-69 with 17 seconds remaining in regulation, but Zach LeDay made both free throws and Tech’s defense held UAB on their final possession of the second half to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Tech jumped out to an early lead on a three-pointer by Seth Allen and never trailed in claiming the win.
Allen led the Hokies with 23 points and LeDay and Chris Clarke both added double-doubles for Tech. LeDay had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Clarke scored 10 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. Nick Norton led four Blazers in double figures with 17 points.
Tech out rebounded the Blazers, 46-30, including a 17-10 advantage on the offensive glass. Tech made 24 of 32 free throw attempts on the game and shot 37.5 percent from three-point range.
The Hokies return to action on Tuesday night, as they host Northwestern at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum in the 2015 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The game will be shown live on ESPNU.
