NICEVILLE, Fla. – Virginia Tech lost to fourth-ranked Iowa State, 99-77, in the semifinal of the Emerald Coast Classic on Friday night. The event is being played at Raider Arena on the campus of Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida.
With the loss, Tech falls to 3-2 on the season. Iowa State improves to 4-0 on the season.
The Cyclones jumped out to a commanding 52-30 lead at the half, on the strength of seven for 11 from three-point range. ISU made 20 of 29 shots from the field for 69.0 percent.
In the second half, the Cyclones pushed the lead to as many as 32 points with just over 12 minutes remaining, but the Hokies mounted a fevered comeback, cutting the lead to 88-72 with 5:32 remaining on a lay-up by Chris Clarke. Tech could not draw any closer and ISU held on for the 99-77 victory.
Zach LeDay led four Hokies in double figures with 19 points and eight rebounds. Justin Bibbs and Justin Robinson added 11 points each and Seth Allen had 10 points for Tech. Robinson scored all of his points during the Hokies’ 22-6 run in the second half. Jameel McKay led six Cyclones in double figures, with 23 points.
The Hokies out rebounded ISU, 38-36, including a 15-7 advantage on the offensive glass. Tech shot 46.3 percent from the field, but managed just three for 15 from three-point range.
Tech returns to action on Saturday evening, as the play the loser of the Illinois-UAB game that was the second game of tonight’s evening session in the Emerald Coast Classic.
