UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Virginia Tech lost to Penn State, 61-58, in men’s college basketball action Wednesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center. The game was part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
The Hokies took a 42-34 lead with 11:39 remaining on a three-pointer by Justin Bibbs, but the Nittany Lions went on a 19-2 run to take a 53-44 lead with 4:11 to play. Tech kept it close throughout and, when D.J. Newbill missed a pair of free throws with 4.1 seconds remaining and PSU leading 61-58, Tech rushed the ball up court, but Ahmed Hill missed a long three-point attempt at the buzzer.
Joey van Zegeren led the Hokies with his second double-double of the season, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Bibbs added 16 points and five rebounds in the loss. Newbill led the Nittany Lions with 18 points.
The Hokies, now 4-3 on the season, committed just one turnover in the first half and just eight on the game and held PSU to 37.0 percent from the field, including 16.7 percent from three-point range. Penn State, now 7-1 on the season, out rebounded the Hokies 47-38.
Tech returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., as they host New River Valley rival Radford in Cassell Coliseum.
