PUERTO AVENTURAS, Mexico – Virginia Tech got 26 points off the bench from Adam Smith and a career-high 22 points from Justin Bibbs to lead the Hokies to a 78-63 win over Miami University on Wednesday night in the consolation game of the Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.

The game was close in the first six minutes, but Tech went on a 36-10 run to close the first half and never looked back. The Hokies stretched the lead to as many as 29 points on a jumper by Bibbs with 9:09 remaining and went on the 15-point victory.

The Hokies won the battle of the boards for the first time this season, out rebounding the RedHawks, 35-25. Tech shot 49.0 percent from the field, but 52.6 percent from beyond the three-point arc, by hitting a season-high 10 three-pointers.

Tech made 18-of-24 from the free throw line, including 11-of-14 in the first half. The Hokies were just three of eight from the line last night and the 75.0 percent tonight is a season-high from the team, as the 18 makes.

Eight Hokies scored in the game, led by Smith and Bibbs. Joey van Zegeren came off the bench for a second consecutive game and posted another big night, scoring eight points and grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. Zach McCormick was the only RedHawk in double figures, with 12 points.

Bibbs recorded his best night in his young career. He was 6-8 from the field, including five of six from beyond the arc. He also led the Hokies with three assists. Smith’s 26 points is two points shy of his career high of 28 points last season against Radford and one point behind his 27-point performance last season against No. 1 Michigan State in Brooklyn.

The Hokies return to Cassell Coliseum on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., as they host Morgan State in the final of the four games of the Cancun Challenge.
