Virginia Tech to play in Cancun Challenge
Hokies to join seven other teams in Mexico for annual event

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team will compete in the 2014 Men’s Cancun Challenge Tournament, November 25-26 at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya near Cancun, Mexico.

Tech will compete in the Riviera Division along with Miami (Ohio), Northern Iowa and Northwestern. In the Mayan Division are Elon, Liberty, Morgan State and North Florida. The tournament will begin with eight games played in the United States between November 19-30 as the four teams in the Riviera Division host the four teams in the Mayan Division before all eight travel to Cancun to play two games in their respective divisions.

All four games of the Riviera Division will be nationally televised live in HD from the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya on CBS Sports Network. The Mayan Division games will be webcast live on CBSsports.com, ULive.

The Cancun Challenge is one of the most unique basketball events held each year. Teams stay and play at the Hard Rock Riviera Maya where the resort’s convention center ballroom is converted into an arena which provides fans a close-up view of the games. Once arriving to the hotel, teams and fans are treated to a all-inclusive event with games, practices, dining and entertainment complete with outdoor pools and private beach access.

The Cancun Challenge is owned and produced by Triple Crown Sports, based in Fort Collins, Colorado. Triple Crown Sports also produces the women’s Cancun Challenge, a Division I college basketball tournament during the same week at the same resort, as well as the Preseason and Postseason Women’s NIT. The 2014 tournament will mark the 7th year of the men’s Cancun Challenge. The past two champions (Wisconsin, 2013 and Wichita State, 2012) reached the NCAA Final Four that same season.
