TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team dropped a midweek road contest as it fell to Florida State, 70-50, at the Donald L. Tucker Center Wednesday night. Senior Cadarian Raines led the Hokies with 13 points, while junior Will Johnston wasn’t far behind with a career-high tying 12 points.
Tech kept things close in the opening minutes of action against Florida State, but spent the majority of the opening half playing catch up with the Seminoles. The Hokies never let Florida State have more than a four-point lead until there was six minutes remaining in until halftime. The Seminoles scored five straight points out of the eight-minute media timeout to begin distancing themselves.
Florida State tacked on six consecutive points with under four minutes to play to give itself a 10-point lead, and eventually took a 31-28 advantage into the break.
Freshmen Trevor Thompson and Ben Emelogu gave the Hokies some good first-half minutes, scoring the team’s first eight points of the game. Thompson scored six points in the first half and grabbed five of Tech’s 19 rebounds.
Tech opened the second half with back-to-back buckets from Emelogu and senior Jarell Eddie to force an early Florida State timeout less than two minutes in. The Hokies kept the difference in the single digits for the opening minutes of the new half but hit a dry spell that would allow the Seminoles to gain control.
Raines ended a three-minute scoring drought by the Hokies with 14 minutes remaining and Emelogu got Tech back to within nine with a three on the next possession, but the Seminoles had an answer for everything Tech did. Florida State’s Aaron Thomas not only answered the Emelogu three, but showed off his range making three straight to give the Seminoles a 15-point lead at 48-33 and force a Tech timeout.
Florida State continued to extend its lead as the second half proceeded on. Tech got back to within 12 on two occasions, but Florida State never let up and won by its largest lead of the night, 20 points.
With just over four minutes left in the game, both redshirt sophomore Joey van Zegeren and Thompson fouled out of the game. Van Zegeren finished with nine rebounds and a block, while Thompson gave the Hokies six points, six rebounds and three blocks.
Thomas went 6-for-8 from three-point range and led the Seminoles with 24 points in the game, while Okaro White added 15 and eight rebounds.
Tech out-rebounded the Seminoles 37-33, and grabbed 16 offensive boards in the game, but shot just 34.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from the free throw line.
The Hokies will return to action on Saturday. Feb 8 as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers at noon.
