CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Senior Jarell Eddie came out prepared and energized against Boston College, but his big first half couldn’t lift the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team past Boston College. Tech fell to the Eagles 76-52 on Wednesday night at Conte Forum. Eddie put up 19 points in the first half and finished the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds, as he was the only Hokie to reach double figures. The Eagles had four players score upwards of 10 points and were led by Joe Rahon’s 20.
The Eagles (6-14, 2-5 ACC) pulled away early on with an 11-0 run a little more than three minutes into the game, which was capped off by a pair of 3's from Patrick Heckmann. Eddie put an end to the BC's streak on Tech’s (8-12, 1-7 ACC) first possession out of the 16-minute media timeout and went on to score 10 of Tech’s next 12 points.
Boston College kept the distance for the remainder of the opening half, as Tech never got any closer than seven and trailed by as much as 15. The Eagles took a 46-33 lead into halftime, matching the most points allowed by the Hokies in a first half this season. Michigan State also put up 46 to start the game in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in Brooklyn on Nov. 22.
Back-to-back 3's by Olivier Hanlan and a jumper from Ryan Anderson in the first minute and a half of the new period helped Boston College extend its first-half lead and keep the momentum in its possession. The Hokies’ first points of the second half came nearly three minutes into play, as Hanlan fouled Devin Wilson and argued the call to pick up a technical and his fourth foul of the game. Eddie made both of the free throws for the technical, and Wilson went 1 of 2 from the line on the personal foul.
Even with the team’s leading scorer on the bench for much of the second half due to foul trouble, Boston College was able to keep its lengthy lead for the remainder of the game. It led by as many as 30 points late in the game. Anderson added 18 points, five blocks and eight rebounds for the Eagles, while Heckmann and Hanlan finished the game with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Freshman Ben Emelogu scored eight points for Tech, while junior Christian Beyer tallied seven points and six rebounds.
The Hokies will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 1, as they play host to Maryland at noon in Cassell Coliseum.
