CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A late run at the end of regulation helped lift the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team past the Miami Hurricanes 61-60 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the BankUnited Center. Senior Jarell Eddie led the Hokies with 24 points and eight rebounds, while Garrius Adams paced the Hurricanes with 14 points in each team’s conference opener.
Eddie scored Tech’s final 11 points as part of a 13-3 run in the last seven and a half minutes of the second half. Tech (7-3, 1-0 ACC) had numerous opportunities in the second half to regain a lead it hadn’t seen since midway through the first half, but Miami (5-5, 0-1 ACC) had an answer and would not allow the Hokies to get within a possession.
Late in regulation, Tech freshman Devin Wilson was fouled and had the chance to tie it from the free-throw line, but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Miami’s Adams was fouled on the rebound and made it a three-point game, going 1-for-2 from the line.
On the ensuing possession, Eddie was guarded tightly in the corner but pulled up anyway and nailed the 3-pointer to tie it up at 56 with 45 seconds on the clock. On Miami’s next time down the court, Davon Reed airballed a 3 that sailed out of bounds with 14 seconds to play. Eddie’s attempt at a final shot was blocked and things headed to overtime.
Adams was the first to strike in extra time for Miami, but Tech sophomore Marshall Wood quickly answered with a 3 for the Hokies. With Tech trailing by two and less than 30 seconds to play, Eddie hit a jumper to put the Hokies up 61-59. Adams was fouled on Miami’s next possession, but he only made one of his two free throws with seven seconds left. Miami got the rebound, but an errant shot hit the back of the backboard, and the Hokies escaped.
The Hokies trailed by as much as 13 points in the game. They trailed by seven with a little more than four minutes left in regulation before mounting their rally.
Redshirt sophomore Joey van Zegeren had a career-high 10 rebounds by the half and neared a double-double by game’s end, adding eight points. Freshman Ben Emelogu was the only other Tech player to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points, while Wilson finished the game with five assists.
James Kelly had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Hurricanes, while Reed added 10 points. Neither team shot particularly well in the game, both under 35 percent.
The Hokies will have nearly a two-week break and return to action on Saturday, Dec. 21, as they travel to Richmond to take on VCU in the Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic.
