BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Senior Jarell Eddie earned his first double-double of the season, but the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team came up just short against the Seton Hall Pirates, dropping its final game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, 68-67 in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Eddie finished the game with 19 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with four assists and a career-high four blocks. The Pirates were led by Fuquan Edwin, who hit a late three to take the lead and made four free throws down the stretch to seal win for his team.
Tech got out to an impressive start, going up 8-0 on the Pirates to begin the game. Redshirt sophomore Adam Smith hit a pair of jumpers from beyond the arc and Eddie added another three to open play. A 7-0 run for Seton Hall made it a two-possession game, but Tech held on to the advantage until a 12-3 Seton Hall run tied things up at 29 with just under six minutes remaining in the first half.
The two teams would trade the lead five times in the closing minutes of the first half, but Seton Hall took the 38-36 lead into the break. Eddie led the Hokies with 10 points at the half, and Smith added nine, all coming from three-point range.
For the second straight game, the Hokies were plagued by foul trouble. Senior Cadarian Raines picked up three in the first half and was called for his fourth in the first minute of the new period, while three other players had two fouls by halftime.
Despite evening the game back up 16 seconds into the new half, it didn’t take long for Seton Hall to regain and maintain its first-half lead. Tech kept things close and never let the Pirates make the difference more than five points during the second half.
With under five minutes to play, the Hokies took their first lead since a C.J. Barksdale bucket to start off the second half. Freshman Ben Emelogu hit a three to tie it and finished off a fast break started by Eddie with a dunk to put the Hokies up 57-55. Seton Hall tied it back up at 57, but Tech wouldn’t trail again until a three from Edwin made it 62-61 with 27 seconds on the clock. Tech was forced to foul in the closing seconds of the game and a costly turnover with 12 seconds remaining went on to make it a two-possession game.
Emelogu got it back within two when he hit a three with four seconds left, but Edwin made both free throws on the ensuing foul to make it a four-point difference. The freshman struck again from beyond the arc in the final second but the Hokies remained just short as time ran out.
Emelogu hit four threes in the game and finished with 18 points off the bench. Smith added 11 for Tech.
Seton Hall shot just 32.3 percent from the field in the game, but 14 Tech turnovers cost the Hokies in the end. The Pirates saw four players reach double figures, including Eugene Teague who had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Hokies return to the court and Blacksburg on Tuesday, Nov. 26 to host Furman at 7 p.m.
