RALEIGH, N.C. – A career day for Marshall Wood and a near-30-point performance from Erick Green just weren’t enough for the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team as it fell in the overtime thriller, 90-86, to NC State at PNC Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Hokies fall to 11-14 on the year and 2-10 in ACC play, dropping their eighth straight, while NC State moves to 18-7 on the year and 7-5 in league play.
The game was close from start to finish as neither team led by more than seven at any point, but it was the late heroics of Jarell Eddie that kept the Hokies alive in the final seconds of regulation. A 3-pointer by NC State’s Scott Wood gave the Wolfpack a 74-68 lead with 48 seconds to play, and Green followed with a jumper to make it a four-point game.
Forced to foul in the closing seconds of regulation, a Lorenzo Brown miss at the line, was followed by a big 3-pointer from Eddie to make it a two-point game 77-75. Wood went 1 for 2 at the line on the ensuing possession and NC State decided to foul Green with a three-point lead.
Green made the first and purposely missed the second, bouncing it off the right side of the rim, where it was met by Eddie and tipped back in to tie the game at 78 with two seconds on the clock. Brown’s last-second floater from beyond the arc was off target and the Hokies headed to overtime for the fourth time this season and third time in conference play.
Brown was the first to score in overtime, but back-to-back threes from Eddie kept the lead on Tech’s side until a pair of free throws from Tyler Lewis gave NC State the edge.
The Wolfpack went 5 for 6 from the free throw line in the closing minutes of overtime to close out the game.
Tech made use of both a 7-2 run in the beginning of the second half and a 9-0 run midway through to distance itself, but the Wolfpack was able to work its way back in and go on a 12-0 run of its own to keep things close down the stretch.
The Hokies led at the half, 36-34 after trailing by only a possession or two for much of the opening period. They held NC State’s entire lineup, which includes four 1,000-point scorers, to single digits in the first half, with Lewis leading the team at the break with nine points off the bench. The Wolfpack responded though, and finished the game with six of its seven players that saw time scoring in double figures. Wood paced the team with 22 points, including six threes, while Richard Howell recorded a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
Marshall Wood had a career day and by far his best performance in league play as he earned the first double-double of his young career, setting new bests with 14 points and 16 rebounds. Eddie added 17 points for Tech, while Green paced the squad with 29 points and eight assists.
Tech returns to action on Thursday, February 21, to host No. 2 Duke at Cassell Coliseum. The game will begin at 9 p.m. and air on ESPN.
