ATLANTA, Ga. – The Virginia Tech Hokies fought back from an 11-point deficit with 13 minutes to play in regulation and defeated Georgia Tech, 70-65, in McCamish Pavilion on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Hokies are now 10-6 overall and 1-2 in the ACC and the Yellow Jackets fall to 10-5 overall and are 0-3 in conference action.
The Hokies kept the game close throughout and trailed 25-22 at the intermission. Georgia Tech stretched the lead to 43-32 with 13:52 remaining in regulation. Then, the Hokies started getting stops defensively and cut the lead to 53-50 on a three-point field goal from Erick Green with 6:51 remaining in the second half. The Hokies’ defense held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal for the last 3:44 of the second half. Cadarian Raines had a bucket with 1:05 remaining and Erick Green tied the game with 24 seconds left in regulation. Georgia Tech got off one last shot, the the attempt missed and Jarell Eddie grabbed the rebound to send the game into overtime.
In the extra session, the Hokies scored the first seven points and never trailed in overtime. Eddie and Green iced the game with four free throws in the final 10 seconds of the overtime.
Green, the nation’s leading scorer, led all scorers with 28 points, 20 points coming after halftime. C.J. Barksdale recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Robert Brown, who missed Wednesday’s game with Boston College, came off the bench to score 10 points for the Hokies. Robert Carter Jr., led the Yellow Jackets with 12 points. Barksdale’s 10 rebounds is a new career-high for the sophomore.
The Hokies out rebounded the taller Yellow Jackets, 43-32, and also outscored GT in the paint, 36-28. Virginia Tech held Georgia Tech to 36.1 percent from the field. Virginia Tech made 19 of their 24 free throw attempts, including 11 of 14 after halftime.
The victory marked Virginia Tech head coach James Johnson’s first Atlantic Coast Conference win. The Hokies are off until next Saturday, when they will host Wake Forest at 2 p.m., in Cassell Coliseum. The game will be televised by the ACC Network.
