BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech’s Erick Green scored 24 points and dished out nine assists, but too many turnovers proved costly, as the Hokies fell to Boston Colle! ge 86-75 in an ACC game played Wednesday night at Cassell Coliseum.

The loss marked Tech’s fourth straight. The Hokies fell to 9-6 overall, 0-2 in ACC play. BC, which had lost five of its previous six games at Cassell, is now 9-6, 1-1.

Tech shot 51.8 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Eagles 34-33. But the Hokies turned the ball over 17 times and that led to 29 BC points.

“That’s something we haven’t been doing,” Tech coach James Johnson said. “I don’t know what it was tonight. We had multiple guys with multiple turnovers, and I don’t know where that came from.

“This was a tough loss. I give BC credit. They came in and had three guys in double figures. They played well, and they got to the free-throw line. We did some good things. We out-rebounded them, but we didn’t take care of the basketball. When you don’t take care of the basketball and it leads to 29 points, that’s tough.”

BC trailed 26-22 after Tech’s Will Johnston hit a 3-pointer with 3:57 left in the first half. But the Eagles closed the half with a 10-0 lead, taking a 32-26 bulge at halftime on Dennis Clifford’s dunk with four seconds remaining.

The Eagles then opened the second half with a 10-4 run, hitting their first four shots from the floor. An Olivier Hanlan 3-pointer with 17:18 remaining gave them a 42-30 lead and forced Tech coach James Johnson to call a timeout.

The Hokies battled to within three points, 61-58, on a basket by C.J. Barksdale with 7:02 remaining, but got no closer than five points the rest of the way.

BC got a dominant second half from forward Ryan Anderson, who scored 16 of his game-high 26 points in the final 20 minutes. The sophomore made 11 of 17 from the floor for the game, and he finished with nine rebounds. Lonnie Jackson added 22 points, hitting five 3-pointers.

The Eagles shot 48.3 percent from the floor and hit eight 3-pointers. They also dished out 17 assists and only turned the ball over five times.

“We do it in practice, and I think we do a great job,” Green said of Tech’s defense, which has been inconsistent this season. “I don’t know. It’s not translating in a game. We should be able to play it. I don’t understand it, but we’re going to fix it. As a leader, I got to figure out something, and we’ve got to get these guys going. We’ve got to win a game and get our confidence back.”

Green paced the Hokies with 24 points, hitting 10 of 19 from the floor, including 3 of 4 from beyond the 3-point arc. He has now scored at least 20 points in 14 of 15 games this season. Jarell Eddie added 21 points.

Tech will try to right the ship on Saturday when the Hokies travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech. Tip-off for that game is slated for 2:30 p.m.
