COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team fell to the Maryland Terrapins, 94-71 Saturday afternoon at Comcast Center on the Maryland campus. The game opened conference play for both teams.
Tech now stands at 9-5 on the season, 0-1 in the ACC, while Maryland extended its win streak to 13 games and moved to 13-1 on the year, 1-0 in the league.
Maryland made two quick baskets to start the game, getting out to a 5-0 lead early on. Tech answered but the Terps kept at least about a 10-point difference for much of the opening half.
Two free throws from Erick Green midway through the half made it a two-possession game at 26-20, and the Hokies continued to battle back from there. A three from Robert Brown and a jumper from Green cut Maryland’s lead to just three points at 34-31.
The Terps called a timeout after the made basket and the regrouping helped. They responded with a quick bucket and turned it into an 11-0 run with three straight threes, two coming from Jake Layman.
That was the last time the Hokies would see a single-digit deficit, heading into the half down 53-37.
Though Layman cooled off in the second half, making all four of his threes in the first, he had 18 points at the break, but finished the day with just 20. Seth Allen, who came off the bench, stepped up for the Terps as he led the team with 21 points, 14 of which came in the second half.
Green, the ACC’s leading scorer, returned to his high-scoring ways in the game as he led the Hokies with 28 points. Brown added 11 points and Joey van Zegeren, who logged his first career start, matched his career high with 10 points. Robert Brown added 11 points for Tech.
Cadarian Raines set a new career and conference best on the glass, finishing the game with 13 rebounds. Christian Beyer also gave the Hokies great production off the bench, scoring six points and grabbing seven rebounds in just 15 minutes of action. Tech was able to do a good job on the offense glass, recording an 18-13 advantage, while being out rebounded overall by the much taller Terps just 41-38.
The Hokies will return to the court Wednesday, Jan. 9 as they host Boston College at Cassell Coliseum at 7 p.m.
