SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Virginia Tech completed the non-conference portion of its 2012-13schedule with a 97-71 loss to BYU in Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Hokies fall to 9-4 overall, while the Cougars improve to 10-4 on the season.
Tech never led in the game and trailed 56-31 at the intermission. The Hokies were able to play the Cougars fairly even in the second half, but were never able to make too much of a run to cut into BYU’s lead.
Jarell Eddie led three Hokies in double figures with 17 points, to go along with his seven rebounds. Robert Brown added 13 points and Erick Green, the nation’ leading scorer, was held to just 12 points, although he did hand out six assists. Christian Beyer came off the bench to record career-highs with nine points, 11 rebounds and two assists.
Tyler Haws led all scorers with 42 points and Brandon Davies added 17 points for the Cougars. Josh Sharp had 10 points for BYU.
The Cougars led most major catagories in the contest. They out rebounded Tech, 48-39, and held Tech to just 38.1 percent from the field, including 2-20 from three-point range. BYU shot 46.5 percent from the floor, including seven of 19 from three-point range.
The Hokies open Atlantic Coast Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 5, as they travel to Maryland. The Hokies and the Terrapins tip-off at noon and the game will be shown by the ACC Network.
